Hi! My name is Maria and I live in North Florida with my husband, Richard and our four legged kids. I am a retired state law enforcement officer. I worked as a state officer for the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services. Before becoming a sworn officer, I was a communications officer for the Florida Highway Patrol. Before that I spent 6 years with the City of West Palm Beach Police Department as a Crime Scene Investigator. Due to back issues, I unfortunately had to take an early retirement.
I am now a “lady of leisure”!! Most my friends would laugh at that because I am busier now then I was before. I enjoy working out, working around my home, photography, reading, movies, gaming, and all the things you say you will do when you don’t have to work again! I am a big animal advocate and also spend time rescuing homeless animals. Cats are my specialty, but I will not turn my head away from a dog or any other animal I find in need.
Back in 2009 I was very much involved in sports. I have completed several sprint distance triathlons and 5Ks, one 10k and one 13k. I also competed in several open water swim challenges. Those are basically one mile ocean swims. They are awesome!! Since work is not an issue at the moment, I have been seriously thinking about getting back in shape and giving it all (TRIs, 5Ks, and open water swims) another season. Since its been awhile, needless to say, I have my work cut out for me. And the fact that I have had 5 knee surgeries, 2 right ankle/foot surgeries, and a low back double fusion doesn’t help matters at all. But hey, I’ve got the time, just need to find the motivation. Retirement can make you lazy 🙂
My hometown is West Palm Beach, Florida. I need to visit more often, and when I do, I love to spend time in or near the ocean. Who knows, maybe I will compete in that area! For now I am focusing on myself and living life one moment at a time. I’m trying to enjoy the small things in life. The things I was always rushing past when duty called.
Nice Trek bike. I’ve got one myself that I am dusting off. Rode it for the first time in a long time yesterday. I was so out of breath and struggling it was pathetic. One step at a time will get us there, though. I’ll keep you up on what I’m getting done and you do the same. Hopefully we can both get back into shape! 😉
Mark, That sounds great!!! You are taking steps in the right direction and that’s what counts!! I lost focus, but tomorrow I am going to get myself moving again. I need to take my bike to the shop and get it serviced. Then we can trade stories about our bike rides 🙂 Good Luck and I look forward to your posts!!
Welcome! Good luck with your blog.
